Things that Interest Me!... Kid Survey

Okay, this is really overdue and late... late... late.  But that's what happens when you take on a home improvement project on the Fourth of July weekend that stretches into the following two weeks!  We are finally done!  The kitchen table has been stripped, sanded, repaired, stained and varnished and now I can get jump back normal stuff like laundry, dishes, and writing!  The first thing I finished writing was my student interest reading survey patterned after the student surveys reviewed in the Book Whisperer, which I started a million days ago.  (Yes, I exaggerate!)

If you have been following along with the Book Whisperer  posts, you will remember that Chapter 2 ends with a brief discussion on using interest surveys to foster  engagement and independent reading habits in student readers.  Designed for primary grades, this easy to complete survey will provide some good information which can be used to guide your suggestions for independent reading materials.

Before school starts, I plan to share the survey with several of my tutoring students and my five year old son.  When school starts, I will pass the survey out during our "Meet the Teacher" event just prior to the beginning of the year.  I like the idea of the students completing the survey with their parents nearby so parents have the advantage of hearing the information from their own children.  With a little encouragement from the classroom, they can then use the survey information to provide more independent reading material relevant and interesting to their children.  So here ya' go... one student interest survey titled Things that Interest Me!  I hope you find it helpful... It's free!
